Dec. 21: "Heroin Moves Into Connecticut Suburbia
"
Heroin use has grown to epidemic proportions here in Connecticut and not just in the larger cities, reported The Hartford Courant. According to state and local police, the drug can now be found in every suburb and is most popular with 18- to 25-year-olds. There is evidence of heroin's growing popularity amongst the 13- to 17-year-old crowd as well. It's inexpensive to purchase (the average price is $4-$5 bag), making the drug more affordable than other opiates that its high mimics, such as OxyContin and Percocet. Peter Rockholz, deputy commissioner of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, said that close to 70 percent of heroin addiction starts with taking a pain medication from the family medicine cabinet, even if that medication is prescribed for someone else.

Dec. 30: "

Would the teenage perpetrators have chosen not to commit acts of violence if someone had reached out to them, offering help of some kind? No one knows for sure, however, The Orlando Sentinel interviewed a forensics psychologist and author of "How Children Become Violent," and noted 10 warning signs that can precede teen violence.
