Radio
Caroline North was anchored
off the Isle of Man between 1964 - 1968 and, during that
time, a very good relationship developed between the broadcasters
and the Islanders. Now, forty years after the station's
demise, Manx National Heritage is paying tribute to the
Island's former offshore friends. A September Convention
and an exhibition titled 'Pirates
of the Irish Sea' is being mounted from August 2008
to Spring 2009. Companion
Book - Manx Giant (Caroline
North 1964-68)

Memories
of Hungary in
the Sixties
from Paul
Gabor
"I must've stumbled across Beatles music
in the vast radio space mostly made up of static
and interference but I didn't know if I did, I
had no reference and boy, were those waves a mess!
In this frustration one dubious hope remained,
an almost-miracle, and it happened. To everyone's
greatest surprise State Radio Petofi (largely
corresponding to BBC 2) made a slight political
mistake and announced the formal introduction
of The Beatles' first LP. We were glued to the
radio - every self-respecting young boy and girl
in the nation."

Cropredy's
tag-line says it all - 'Where does the time go?'.
It's hard to believe that it's nearly 40 years since
the end of 'The Sixties' and we're all getting that
much older - but the spirit remains, as do the memories
of the great personalities and stars of the decade
who have left us - God bless them all!
As always, you can get to most of the hundreds of
pages in Sixties City by starting from the menu
on the left or by clicking on the various images,
icons and links around the site.
Most subjects and articles are cross-linked but
you might just come across some interesting 'gems'
still doing their best to hide if you dig deep enough!
60s
Thanks
to all of you who visit this site or e-mail me with
questions, information and your own personal memories.
I have to say that I'm finding less and less time
to be able to work on the site at the moment and
I'm very grateful to people like Danny and Bill
who contribute to the site content. I will continue
to make numerous small changes and additions to
the content each week and add more major content
on new pages when available.
60s
Whether
you're feeling nostalgic, researching some facet
of the Sixties or just browsing, you are always
very welcome at Sixties City. I hope you'll
find this a fab, fascinating and child-safe starting
place for discovering, or reminiscing, the many
and varied aspects of a truly fantastic decade!
Whatever your age or culture, take a few moments
to consider these quotations, legacies from the
mind of the late John Lennon:-
|
" If everyone
demanded peace instead of another television
set, then there'd be peace"
"I'm not going to change the way I
look or the way I feel to conform to anything.
I've always been a freak.
So I've been a freak all my life and I have
to live with that, you know. I'm one of
those people"
"If someone thinks that love and peace
is a cliche that must have been
left behind in the Sixties, that's his problem.
Love and peace are eternal"
"Reality leaves a lot to the imagination"
"Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted"
"Possession isn't nine-tenths of the
law. It's nine-tenths of the problem"
.
. . . and of the Sixties in particular?
“The
thing the Sixties did was to show us the
possibilities and the responsibility that
we all had.
It wasn't the answer . . . it just gave
us a glimpse of the possibility”
