Torture the Velvet
Dec 02, 2008 - 3:06 AM - by FergHova
Its the holidays, and we're feeling charitable. So here's what we're going to do. For every donation given, it garners a story. The dollar amount dictates the word count. The person that makes the donation also gets to pick the the subject. If they want a gunslinging battle, we give them one. If they want erotic porn, we send it to CandleMan. So this is a call. The deadline for donations is going to be toward the end of the month, and the deadline for the stories will be in February. Details are to come over the next couple of days, but right now we're looking for participants.

Who's willing to write their asses off?

Interview: Vincent Louis Carrella
Nov 30, 2008 - 11:14 PM - by Malickfan
Back in March, our very own Craig Clevenger alerted The Velvet to a new book by Vincent Louis Carrella called Serpent Box. His praise was well-justified, as Serpent Box turned out to be one of the best books of 2008. While Serpent Box is his first novel, Carrella has written many short stories, which you can find at www.serpentbox.com.

THE VELVET: So your book's been out for quite a while now. How has everything been since the release?

VINCENT LOUIS CARRELLA: Well everything has been … well, I can’t think of an adjective. It’s been good and bad. Hellish. Stressful … but also humbling, so you’ll need to be more specific.

VELVET: Just wasn't sure if your life has changed since the release? Obviously you get to travel and meet new people.

VLC: Well it’s not what one might expect. My life has not changed per se and I have done very little traveling. My publisher sent me to a couple places. I’ve done ten readings. It’s been way more scary and stressful than I ever thought.

The List
Nov 29, 2008 - 3:05 AM - by Flash
If you come in through the front door of the site, you may've been wondering what The List is over there in the right-side navigation. As with Interviews, Reviews, etc., it's one of the new site features that has taken extra time to populate and post. The List is the forum for Velvet member original fictions available online.

The criteria for inclusion are simple:
• you must be an active contributing member
• the piece must be published online through a reputable third-party site (not your own)
• readable for free via direct link
• fiction
• preferably short

Exceptions to any of these may be approved at our discretion. Please do not submit links to your blog posts or printed editions for sale.

Got something new out there? Just hit the Submissions > Published Work link (maintain the "Story Title by Author's Realname" thread title format and disable your sig), which will create a new topic in The List, and later be posted upon approval.

Hey guys,

Some of us here have been writing for Colored Chalk. Issue #5 is coming out soon, I think you'll be excited. I'm the editor for #6, and would love to have you submit. The theme is "Waking Up Strange."

I look forward to your work. PM me or hit my e-mail at wickerkat@aol.com if you have questions.

Thanks,
Richard

Calling all photographers
Nov 19, 2008 - 9:14 PM - by wickerkat
I'm editing an upcoming issue of Colored Chalk. You can visit the site here at http://www.coloredchalk.com. A couple of us have published here and we're really getting some great writing.

Issue #6 will start accepting writing submissions soon, but I'm looking for photography as well. It'll end up being black and white. The theme is WAKING UP STRANGE. Could be morning, noon, or night. In a hotel, apartment, or cornfield. If you have anything you think might be appropriate PM me or drop me a line at wickerkat@aol.com. Put COLORED CHALK in the subject line so I don't miss it. Wanted to give you guys lead time in case you wanted to go out and shoot something.

Deadline for fiction submission is Dec. 31, so try to get it in by then. No pay, but you will get photo credits.

Thanks,
Richard
